Laser Engraving

Definition of Laser Engraving:
Laser engraving is the practice of using lasers to engrave or mark an object (it is also sometimes incorrectly described as etching, which involves the use of acid or a similar chemical).

The technique can be very technical and complex, and often a computer system is used to drive the movements of the laser head. Despite this complexity, very precise and clean engravings can be achieved at a high rate. The technique does not involve tool bits which contact the engraving surface and wear out.

In situations where physical alteration of a surface by engraving is undesirable, an alternative such as "marking" is available.

Surface Engraving
Surface Engraving is an advanced process that can yield amazing results. The definition of surface marking: to change to properties of the surface of a substrate to achieve a desired marking, while doing so by removing no or very little material from that substrate.

Surface marking is mainly achieved by adding heat to the surface of a part to permanently discolor or anneal the desired marking into the surface of that part without damaging or changing that part.

Surface marking can also be achieved by removing only a very small amount of material from a part. An example of that process would be removing anodize or oxide form the surface of a treated part. Within the classification of surface marking there is a very wide range of capabilities that our lasers possess. These capabilities range from text character height as small as .008", discoloration marking on plastic, anneal marking on steel and color marking on titanium.
